As the colds and flu season comes along its important to protect yourself against all kinds of ailments. Taking preventive steps go a long way in keeping you healthy throughout the season. Getting a flu vaccination is highly recommended, besides things like washing the hands with soap and water, especially after coming from public places or hobby classes like pole dancing courses, and covering the nose and mouth with a handkerchief when sneezing or coughing. Pregnant women and children are especially prone to flu complications as also those with asthma, diabetes or lung ailments. You should be aware that certain foods help boost immunity and protect against flu and cold. Make it a point to include them in your daily diet.

The best immunity boosting foods are fresh fruits and vegetables. They contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which are beneficial for body cells. Almost all fruits and vegetables contain phytonutrients, some of which are also called flavonoids that help boost immunity and reduce risk of illness and infections. These include apples, berries, grapes and other citrus fruits besides broccoli and cabbage. Some people believe that you should avoid dairy products in case of flu and cold. But this is not true as they contain probiotics that helps stimulate the immune system and ward off diseases. According to one study, a cup of yogurt taken daily reduced susceptibility to colds.

You might take it as folklore but chicken soup is the most effective in fighting cold and its symptoms. When you’re sick a bowl of hot chicken soup makes you feel better by hydrating the body and giving you energy. In fact, it’s effective in increasing nasal airflow that helps in getting rid of viruses and bacteria.

It’s wiser to rely on foods than vitamins to keep yourself well protected against flu. Besides fruits and vegetables, a diet rich in lean meats and legumes is good for you. And of course avoid all unhealthy foods.
